Causes of ED

There is not just one factor but many that can be the reason of Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Causes of ED may include physical, psychological or hormonal factors. We can better state ED as a physical and psychological impotence that have a negative and direct impact on lives of two people. If talking about physical causes, then almost any disorder or physical problem can lead to ED because of altered vascular, hormonal and nervous system. Unwanted effects of medications can be another reason to ED in a man.

ED because of vascular diseases:

Around half of ED cases have the roost cause of vascular diseases in old men. These vascular diseases can be summarized as;

• Heart attacks
• Atherosclerosis, in which arteries are hardened because of excess of fat deposition
• Peripheral vascular disease
• Uncontrolled blood pressure problems

However, troubled or injured pelvic blood vessels and nerves can also lead to development of ED.
Smoking is also considered as the potential reason of ED in men.

Nervous diseases that can lead to development of ED

• Trauma
• Parkinson disease

Psychological problems associated with ED

• Depression
• Widower syndrome
• Performance anxiety

Medications used in treatment of other major physical problems can also become the reason for ED. Some of medications include;

• Antipsychotics
• Antidepressants
• Antihypertensives
• Antiulcer drugs
• Hormonal medication, like Zoladex, Lupron, finasteride (Proscar), or dutasteride (Avodart)
• Drugs to control cholesterol level
• Alcohol
• marijuana and cocaine

Systemic diseases that can become a potential cause of ED

• Diabetes
• Cancer
• Liver cirrhosis
• Renal (kidney) failure

More interestingly, it has been found that malnutrition is also a potential reason to cause development of ED in men. It reduces the energy level, thus reduced capability of erection. Though it is under research yet but various surgical procedures like, retroperitoneal or pelvic lymph node dissection, aortoiliac or aortofemoral bypass, transurethral resection of the prostate are also found to cause ED in a majority of cases.
